Emulsifier S20 and Emulsifier S80 are two important parts of Emulsifier Span series, which is also known as sorbitan fatty acid ester.
The CAS number of Emulsifier S20 is 1338-39-2, while Emulsifier S80 is 1338-43-8.
Span20 and Span80 both belong to the Polysorbate series of non-ionic emulsifiers. Their primary distinction lies in the type of fatty acid they are bonded to, which influences their hydrophilic/lipophilic characteristics and emulsifying properties. Span20 is a monostearate-based emulsifier exhibiting strong hydrophilicity, enabling rapid emulsification of fats or oily components within aqueous systems. It offers high emulsification efficiency with moderate foaming properties, making it suitable for formulations with low to moderate oil content, such as standard skincare emulsions, pharmaceutical creams, food emulsifiers, or general industrial emulsification systems.
In contrast, Span 80 is an emulsifier based on monolaurate, exhibiting greater hydrophobicity and higher tolerance for oil phases, resulting in more stable emulsified oil droplets. S80 is commonly used in high-oil-content emulsions, emulsification of oily active ingredients, or premium skincare products. It forms more durable and stable emulsions within lotions, making it suitable for applications demanding high emulsion stability.
In summary, Span 20 favours aqueous-phase emulsification, being suitable for rapid dispersion and low-to-medium oil content systems; Span 80 favours oil-phase emulsification, being suitable for high oil content systems requiring high stability. Depending on the oil-to-water ratio in the formulation and the required emulsion stability, either S20 or S80 can be flexibly selected to achieve the desired emulsification effect and product texture.
